Introduction Motivation is defined as Internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job, role or subject, or to make an effort to attain a goal. Motivation results from the interaction of both conscious and unconscious factors such as the (1) intensity of desire or need, 2) incentive or reward value of the goal, and (3) expectations of the individual and of his or her peers (Business Dictionary, 2014). Major brands and organisations, for example Kelloggs, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Google and JD Wetherspoon are increasingly allocating resources and research into employee motivation. These companies believe that their performance and growth in the market is a direct result of staff motivation, deriving from the recruitment, training and development opportunities (businesscasestudies, 2014). Organisations are realising that motivated employees could potentially grow the brand reputation and increase profits. If employees are well motivated, they are likely to feel fulfilled and happy in the workplace. Subsequently, they are more likely to be more productive and produce higher quality work. A well motivated workforce could also allow the company to retain good staff thus saving money on recruitment and training, and ensure a committed workforce (businesscasestudies, 2014).
